Watch of the Month March 2019

Picture
This March, I happened to be at Cellini Jewelers in Manhattan and was playing around with the Vacheron Constantin Overseas model from 2018. The watches blue dial and custom 24K gold rotor is really a pleasure to view in person. Another neat feature is the quick release strap feature which allows the user to quickly swap out the supplied end fitted rubber or leather bands. We also cannot forgot that Vacheron is considered to be part of the so called Holy Trinity in Swiss Watchmaking along with Patek Phillippe and Audemars Piguet. Anyway, the watch is crafted and finished with beautiful edges and surfaces, likewise the bracelet - which I found to be a delight on my wrist. It is definitely a watch enthusiasts brand as Patek can go both ways with its’ high status symbolism.

Watch of the Month Feb 2019 - Oceanica OP-1 Automatic Flieger

Picture
Hello! February is amongst us and my pick for this month is the all new Oceanica OP-1 Flieger. Oceanica is a new and upcoming brand and this is their second release so far. The watch comes in a blue sunburst dial or a black matte finished dial, but my pick is blue. This watch has the quality and specifications of many higher priced fliegers and timepieces in general for a much more affordable price. Well, what is the kick? Absolutely nothing! They are just providing a watch which they will obviously profit less on but pass on a greater savings to their customer. For example, German brand Laco has a blue dial flieger with a Miyota 8215 movement which is a really cheap entry level japanese movement and their watch sells for $400! The Op-1 features a miyota 90S5 automatic movement which contains 24 jewels, has a 40 hour power reserve, and beats at 28,800 BPH. It is essentially the equivalent of an ETA-2824 and was built to compete with it, at a more affordable price. Overall, the finishing is decent and we get a sapphire crystal on the front, and the back where the movement is exhibited. Anyway, for $274.99 I do not honestly think you will find a watch from a smaller brand with the same specs. Have an awesome month!

January 2019 - Watch of the Month - Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39MM

Picture
The new Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39MM has to be one of the best value rolex pieces you can buy for $5700 USD from your local authorized dealer. Also, there is no shortage of these pieces making them easier to come by than something like a Submariner or GMT. It comes equipped with the Rolex Caliber 3132 which features a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. Also, just like any other Rolex it is COSC certified and then Rolex certified for timekeeping and consistency. My personal favorite is the black dial variation, but they do make a nice white and blue dial variation for 2019. If this is your first Rolex watch or perhaps your fifth - I do not think you can go wrong with a nice simple, elegant, proportionate 39MM OP.

Watch of the Month - November 2018

Picture

Welp, the fall season is upon us watch collectors and enthusiasts and another great month lies ahead. I have chosen the 16570 Rolex Explorer II for the WOTM, for good reason. The 16570 is a discontinued Rolex steel sports watch which packs quite a punch for the money in terms of Rolex. It has a great reliable COSC in house certified GMT movement, a date function, and is well under $6000 USD on the pre-owned market. In todays times you cannot even find a pre owned no date submariner for this price, nor a GMT Master. It is a rather low key, functional, everyday sports watch with superb lume and a 100M water resistance rating adding to the versatility of this GMT. I also have written a full review of this piece and a hands on video review on YouTube if you did not check that out yet. Be well my fellow watch addicts, and see you next month!

Watch of the Month - October 2018

Picture

Welcome back to another WOTM ! This month I have chosen the value packed and affordable Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba dive watch. This iteration of the Navy is also Halloween appropiate...

The watch is a rather simple, yet slightly elegant 100M steel dive watch which sits in a 40MM case. The watch houses the new Hamilton H-20 caliber which gives the end user 70 hours of power reserve and a decent accuracy. The applied lumed markers themselves slightly remind me of vintage dive watches from the past and early era of divers such as the Superocean by Breitling, or the Zodiac divers. It features either a custom color coordinated Nato strap or a stainless steel bracelet. The best part about this watch is its’ price, under $500. This watch ticks all the boxes including Sapphire crystal, reliable ETA movement, 100M of water resistance, and it is produced by a decent entry level Swiss Made brand.

September 2018 - Tudor Black Bay GMT “Pepsi”

Picture

September has arrived and all the younger folks are headed back to college, teachers heading back to class, and me..well talking about watches. The watch I have chosen for this month is the all new Tudor Black Bay GMT “Pepsi” watch. This model was released this past baselworld 2018 and is available at your local authorized dealer, if you can score one. Somehow, I believe the rarity of obtaining the new Rolex GMT Pepsi has somehow converted enthusiasts to lean towards the Black Bay GMT. I say this because of the incredible quality and value this watch offers the consumer. We get an in-house 70 hour power reserve GMT movement with an independent GMT hand, along with a date. Tudor also really played the color game correctly, while Rolex failed at that in my eyes on their new iteration of the Pepsi GMT. This watch is also super affordable for a luxury timepiece coming in at under $4000 USD. I think this will be a future classic, and can foresee demand rising with soaring prices.

Watch of the Month August 2018

Tissot Seastar 1000 Automatic Dive Watch

Picture

Tissot unveiled their latest Seastar model at Baselworld of 2018 and it is currently available for sale. They have obviously made some major cosmetic changes and all around for the pricepoint of $500 on bracelet or a tad cheaper on this beautiful end fitted rubber strap ( my preference ). The watch is 43MM and contains the Tissot Calibre Powermatic 80 which is essentially a modded ETA movement with a slower beat rate to allow an incredible 80 hours of power reserve. The blue/black dial reminds me a bit of the Rolex James Cameron Deepsea, but indeed stands out on this robust diver. All of the goodies including great lume, sapphire crystal, and a well placed circular date aperture at 6:00 allows the Seastar to be utilized as a true divers watch or just an everyday watch. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for next month. I do reccommend JomaShop if you are looking to grab one of these, and have left a link below.

Watch of the Month July 2018

Picture

The watch of the month for July of 2018 should be something in relation to patriotism and american made...or somewhat used to be.

Hamilton used to be an American watch company supplying watches to American troops and the general lublic. They mainly built tool watches and very simple elegant, classic, and reliable mechanical watches. They also have produced some very nice Pocket Watches during the era in which they were American. The watch I chose is the Hamilton Khaki Field King automatic 38MM. This watch is simply the best watch under $500 one can obtain in my humble opinion and I wear myne proudly.

JUNE 2018 - Watch Of The Month

Breitling Superocean Heritage II

Picture
The new Breitling Superocean Heritage 2 is the cultivation of some of the best of Tudor and Breitling combined. This watch features the B20 automatic 70 Hour power reserve in house movement. The movement is excellent, and when looking at watches around $4,000 USD , I doubt you can do much better. The upgraded ceramic bezel stays up to date with the other Swiss Giants and the new Rubber straps are beautifully crafted and go along oh so well with this model. It is available in a few dial and bezel variations and stays true in many ways to the original Breitling Superocean, introduced in the early 1950s.

Watch of the Month May 2018

Rolex President Day-Date 18038 - Best Value Gold Rolex Watch

Picture
The watch of the month for May is going to be a classic, the Rolex President Day Date 18038 18K. This watch can be had for as low as 10K and as high as 11K due to condition, box/papers, and 100% originality. It is a great looking design that will honestly never go out of style and last years to come. If properly serviced and taken care of even this example from 1980 can last a lifetime. Rolex makes very sublte changes on their models and this helps watches not have that “Vintage” look in some years. Anyway, Enjoy the nicer weather and there is much more to come from Watch Addict Blog/ Watch Addiction YouTube this month!

ROLEX HISTORY

Picture
Rolex is a Swiss luxury watch brand that was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, England. The company originally began as Wilsdorf and Davis, but it was later renamed to Rolex in 1908.

The first Rolex watches were not manufactured in-house, but instead were made by other watchmakers and then branded with the Rolex name. However, Wilsdorf had a vision of creating a wristwatch that was both reliable and accurate, and he set out to develop his own movements.

In 1910, Rolex became the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, which was a testament to the accuracy of the watch. Over the years, Rolex continued to innovate and develop new technologies and features, such as the first waterproof wristwatch in 1926, the first self-winding mechanism in 1931, and the first wristwatch with a date display in 1945.

Rolex has also been associated with several famous individuals, including explorers, athletes, and celebrities. For example, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay wore Rolex watches when they became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Rolex has also been the official timekeeper of several sporting events, including Wimbledon and the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Today, Rolex is one of the most recognized and respected luxury watch brands in the world, known for its quality, precision, and timeless style.

The main component of a mechanical movement is the mainspring, a spring that gradually unwinds and transmits energy. A mechanical watch will keep accurate time despite requiring winding up if it's manual. ... Inside an automatic watch sits a small weighted rotor that has to oscillate in order to wind the mainspring.
